Chances are that your first thought of a charcoal grill is that of the Weber. Weber has become a well known household brand. Weber is the pioneer of the charcoal grill and each of their new releases is received with excellent feedback and many people that like the features or the design.
The Weber Charcoal Grill is one of the most sought-after portable grills for campers and home use alike. It is simple and easy to transport, with numerous high-end features that set it apart from the newer brands. This was one of the first grills and since the introduction of the Weber charcoal grill, many have not seen any real need to change or move over to something else.
If you are reading this article, you are probably looking for a top quality portable grill. Instead of sifting through the masses, continue reading to find out why this original kettle charcoal grill can be the only one you need!
- 22-inch diameter is plenty large
- Solid steel plating to keep the grill from burning through
- 363 square inches of cooking space (Enough for at least 4 people)
- Porcelain-enameled bowl with excellent heat retention
- Aluminum ash catcher keeps ash from spreading
- 10-year limited warranty
- Only 33.1-pounds make it easy to move and carry around
I believe that the brand says it all and they don’t have an excellent reputation for nothing. Each and every Weber charcoal grill comes with the same attention to detail and quality features that make users come back time and time again. Looking at the Weber 741001 Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill you see the patented Weber design that has become synonymous with their name.
The grill has a diameter of 22-inches, more than enough to give you a cooking surface of almost 370 square inches. As mentioned, you can cook food for 4 people with relative ease and believe you can serve even larger groups of people if needed. With a high 7.5-inch lid, the grill enables you to cook the food without burning it. Additionally, every lid has an air let-out feature, preventing overheating.
You might not think that this is important but take into account that porcelain-enamel is used for the outer coating of the steel plating. I find this gives the grill excellent heat-retention, even cooking your foods once the charcoal is near burnt out. A few people I have talked to claim that they can serve the entire party with just one bag of charcoal and since no propane gas is used, the grill is extremely safe as well.
Because of the design of the Weber, you are able to even make roasts in the Weber. Roast chicken has never tasted as amazing. Its revolutionary design means it works similar to a convection oven when it is heated up.
Weber has definitely thought of everything and they have included heat-resistant handles. If this does not make sense to you now, try moving a grill without handles under the patio once the rain sets in. While we are that topic – The weber is rust resistant and has been specifically coated to be left outside. Obviously a cover will protect it even more.
Many users have complained about the weight being a little excessive. However, the grill is not marketed for long camping trips. It is much better used at your home or a tailgating day-trip that leaves plenty of room for the grill in your vehicle. If you are caught by the game, the one-touch cleaning system allows you to simply lift the ashtray and tip it in a dustbin that will not be damaged when being exposed to hot ash.
Finally, the wheels make it portable and easy to move around from one place to the other. Yes, you might need to carry it when moving long distances, but for moving it from the outside to the inside, the grill can be pushed or pulled with the wheels doing most of the work.

Should You Buy It?
Since this is one of the oldest models and many people still highly rate it, you cannot go wrong when buying it. Weber charcoal grills have massive lifetimes and this could be one of the only grills you ever buy for your shorter trips. I would definitely recommend it for every user, but adding an additional rain cover will keep it protected from long-term rust.
I also think it is important to mention that you should clean it once it has been used. Cleaning the grill will remove the potential for black flakes peeling off from the side as the grill get older. However, this grill does not have any poisonous chemicals you need to be aware of. Unfortunately, it does not work with a propane gas tank, but one can be added if needed.
As an avid griller, I like testing some of the best grills on the market. While this model is quite old, it has stood the test of time and with many people still using it after 20+ years. I believe this can be the only grill you need but would suggest adding the rain cover. The Weber 7176 22 Inch Charcoal Kettle Grill Cover works with most 22-inch Weber models and it includes UV-protection.
