Therm-a-Rest Compressible Travel Pillow Review

The sleeping bag and even the camping cot generally take center stage when it comes to camping. However, we often neglect one of the most crucial things each person needs for a good night’s sleep. Review Of The Therm-A-Rest Compressible Travel Pillow

When you start looking for outdoor gear, one of the first things we look at is the sizes. Since you want to use it in the backcountry, you need something really small and easy to manipulate. The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Travel Pillow is one of these tiny pieces of gear that only takes up around 2.6-liters of the overall space in your backpack.

What makes it so impressive is the filling and the materials. On the inside, the urethane filling will loft higher than most other pillows of a similar nature. Even after being folded a couple of times, the pillow dos not lose any loft. Since the carry bag is added to the pillow, you can simply fold it into itself to save some more space.

When we think of outdoor pillows, we often envision something that resembles a bag. To add some loft to the pillow, you will most likely fill it with some of your clothing or socks. However, you don’t have the same consistency when you do it in this manner and it can occasionally sag a little, or your head might feel like dropping inside.

With this pillow, you have the best consistency I have seen in a long time, while it also resembles the same feeling as your pillow at home. For the cover, the manufacturer has used polyester. This might seem a little hard, but it has been brushed. The brushed polyester feels much softer and elegant against your skin when you sleep.

Furthermore, the polyester gives you the added benefit of being water-resistant. If you end up having a night in the rain, your pillow should dry out in just a couple of minutes in the sun or wind. It does not absorb the moisture from cold weather either, which means that your head will remain warm. This is great if we consider that we lose a lot of heat at night through our head.

Speaking of the weight, we can look at this unit and see that it does not have a lot of excess weight you need to carry around. 9-ounces are light for most people, especially on shorter trips, but it can also be heavy for many backpackers. This is one of the only downsides and it weighs almost as much as your smaller binoculars.

Once you are done with the pillow, you don’t need to wash it by hands and leave it outdoors for hours on end. Fortunately, you can simply pop it into the washing machine to get rid of all the sweat and other odors. Since it does have a small antibacterial coat, we can easily assume that the unit will not leave any foul or frustrating odors to deal with.

The final piece of this puzzle is one that many might like and you can find this in 4 different sizes that all exude comfort. They do feel really comfortable when you are sleeping, but one of the downsides is the height for those who tend to sleep on their stomach. If you sleep on your stomach, you can find the loft to be a little too high for the best comfort.

What We Like:

  • It is soft against your skin
  • Multiple colors are available to choose from
  • The pillow is affordable
  • It does not allow your head to lose too much heat
  • Machine washable design
  • Water-resistant
  • Available in 4 sizes with excellent loft

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Not ideal for stomach sleepers
  • It can be a little heavy for the backcountry

Should You Buy It?

To be honest, there are a couple of pillows that are much lighter than the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Travel Pillow. However, not all of them have the same lofty feel and durability for the outdoors. This pillow will fold to a quarter or even less than the actual size you get when it is inflated. It also inflates itself while only taking a little space in your bag.

Since the price is actually affordable for a brand of this nature, this is one of those opportunities that I would not pass up when it comes to value for your money. You can buy it in 4 different sizes and also choose the colors you feel the most comfortable with. The outer polyester cover will ensure that you have a soft feeling against your head.

Final Thoughts

The outdoor market is becoming more competitive by the day and only the top quality brands are surviving. The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Travel Pillow is definitely designed by one of the best bed brands on the market today. Once you compare it to your pillow at home, you will find that the value you get for your money is worth it. If you are looking for any other options, have a look at our Best List here.
