Camp4 - Climbing News Archive

This just in from EverestNews.com:

Mingma Ongel Sherpa (his first), Kami Sherpa (his 4th), Danuru Sherpa (his second), Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa (his second), Terry LaFrance and Mike Otis all reached the Summit of Everest this morning (5/19) in Tibet via the North Side of Everest.

In what is currently believed to be the first ascent of Everest in 2001 (from either Tibet or Nepal sides), the first of the Summits occurred at 9:20am (Tibet Time) on Saturday May 19. The six climbers were attempting Everest in association with the 2001 Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition. This expedition, led by Eric Simonson of International Mountain Guides in Ashford, WA, has been searching for historical evidence of the Mallory and Irvine expedition and other early expeditions. In 1999 Eric Simonson's team found the remains of the famous British climber George Mallory. In 2001 Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition search team has continued with the world's highest archeology project and has discovered so far the 1924 British Camp 6, the 1933 British Camp 6, the 1960 Chinese Camp 6, and the 1975 Chinese Camp 6. Each of these camps has provided clues to early pioneers of Everest.
