Climbing Bio

I'm a trad climber and mountaineer who started out as a long distance hiker. After seven months on the Appalachian Trail in 1991, I completed the 2000-mile trek in 1992 and produced and distributed the video documentary "Sticking To It: The Appalachian Trail Odyssey," now out of print.

While living and training in southern California I summited Mt. Rainier in 1995 then climbed Orizaba in Mexico in 1996. Skill-building, I completed AAI's week-long "soloist" course on Mt. Hunter and did a similar avalanche course held at Tom's Cabin in the eastern Sierra. Spent the next few years ski touring and climbing in the eastern Sierra, the Cascades and the Gore range in Colorado. Moved back east (not for the lcimbing!) then took a few years off to have a baby.

Returned to climbing with a goal to improving my multi-pitch rock skills in 2004 when I spent a week on Yamnuska in Canmore near Banff. Enjoyed several days in Scotland's Black Cuillin last year where I completed an enchainment called "The Round of Coire Lagan" (5.9) and tried climbing sea stacks for the first time. Amazing! I train locally in the Virginia countryside (I also try to run sand dunes on the eastern shore of lake Michigan in the summer.) and do about 2 trips a year now, an ice climbing or winter mountaineering trip in January and a summer alpine trip.
